How many treatments do I need? 

We recommend 3 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart. Most clients will achieve complete correction in 2 to 3 treatment sessions.
 

Is it suitable for everyone?

Treatments are not advised in & of the following circumstances:

  • Pregnancy

  • Cardiac pacemakers or internal defibrillators (regardless of treatment area)

  • Treating over reproductive organs

  • Treating over implanted devices, including metallic implants, electronic implants, time released medical implants and superficially placed body contouring implants

  • Treating over any wounds

What HAppens at the CONSULTATION PRE-treatment? 

At your appointment we'll evaluate your body's symmetry and the areas that bother you, making recommendations to help you get the look you want. The consultation may include measuring your body weight, circumference and fat thickness. We'll take photographs to help you compare how you look before and after your treatment. 


What HAppens DURING the treatment? 

The TruSculpt handpiece will be placed on the treatment area and turned on. As the treatment begins, you'll feel a gentle warming sensation. The sensation of heat will intensify as the temperature increases. The temperature will be increased slowly, allowing you to adjust to the therapeutic heat. The temperature can also be decreased quickly as needed. Immediately post-treatment effects may include temporary warmth and redness for up to 24 hours, mild swelling for up to 4 days, and sensitivity to the touch for about 1 week. 
 

What is truSculpt?

TruSculpt is the first RF platform to deliver clinically therapeutic temperatures directly to the subcutaneous adipose tissue using a targeted, repeatable and uniform approach. This ensures optimal clinical outcomes while maintaining patient comfort. TruSculpt is a monopolar RF system that offers 1 MHz frequency. The RF energy is delivered via 40 cm2 hand pieces for larger areas and 16cm2 hand pieces for smaller areas.  TruSculpt provides a flexible, customizable approach to circumferential reduction by focusing on 3 specific characteristics: Dimension, Definition and Depth.

 

Why is monopolar RF better than bipolar when it comes to fat destruction and tissue heating?

As stated above, RF current flows between two points. In order to “force” the RF current to flow into the fat layer, a monopolar electrode arrangement is preferred. With the correct electrode configuration, a monopolar or “single” treatment electrode can not only control the path that the current takes, but also the size of area in which it is distributed (i.e. the treatment area and volume treated). This is in stark contrast to bipolar RF systems, where the current flows between the distance of the electrodes. With bipolar RF, the size of the hand piece is determined by the electrodes on either side of the hand piece. Since the skin and connective tissue between the electrodes are more conductive, the RF is less likely to travel to the fat, which is resistant. Some companies try and compensate for this by using a vacuum to elongate the skin distance and elongate the skin distance and shorten the distance between the electrodes in the fat layer. Experiments show that while this helps, it ultimately means that the depth that the current can penetrate is still limited to the amount of tissue drawn in by the vacuum.


How does RF compare to other modalities like laser, cryolipolisis, and ultrasound?


For the purpose of non-invasive body contouring, each technology approaches the disruption of fat differently. These processes can be divided into 3 categories:

1. Bulk Hypothermia (Coolsculpting) This modality uses slow cooling to extract more than 10°C of temperature from the fat cells, initiating an irreversible damage to the fat cells and leading to apoptosis. This is achieved by vacuuming the skin away from the body, which reduces the blood flow to the fat pocket and pulls the tissue into contact with a contouring cooling plate, which has a surface temperature of -11°C. Over the next 15 to 20 minutes, the fat temperature between 5 – 25 mm is reduced to -15°C and is held at this temperature for another 15 minutes. Once this is completed, the area is strongly massaged to reperfuse the treated area with blood and try to amplify the trauma to the already sensitive fat cells. The treatment time at therapeutic temperature efficiency of this method is approximately 40 – 50% (15 min @ temp of, 35 min treatment time) for a 144-cm2 area.

2. Laser-assisted (SculpSure) Under intense contact skin cooling, a 1060 nm laser is heat cycled, while monitoring skin surface temperature, to increase in the fat cell temperature to between 42°C and 47°C. Laser effectively destroys 1 cm3 of fat and this only occurs under the perfect conditions. Efficacy can be greatly reduced in people with brown and more fibrous fat/subcutaneous tissue. It is estimated that approximately 30 – 40% of pulses performed actually disrupt the cell membrane of fat cells at a depth of 15 mm. The treatment time at therapeutic temperature efficiency of this method is considerable lower than other methods. Assuming 20% fat clearance after 3 sessions the approximate time to effect is around 6 – 10% every 45 minutes.
 

Is RF selective in the destruction of tissue?

RF is simple. It will flow along the path of least resistance or the fastest distance between two points. However, if this path is “impeded,” heat is generated. Although this is a natural effect of conducted electrical current, its effect on human tissue cannot be taken for granted. To create consistency of these heat effects and to ensure that the right layers are heated regardless of the thickness of the tissue, it is imperative that sophisticated electronics monitor and correct the amount of RF current delivered. TruSculpt takes this a step further by incorporating a closed temperature feedback loop, which is also tied to the RF generator to optimize energy delivery through the tissue regardless of fat thickness and skin conductivity.
 

Where does the extra RF energy go if not absorbed by tissue?

Unlike laser photons, RF current is made up of positive and negative charged ions that flow through the tissue. Heat is generated by this flow and not by the “absorption” of this energy. This effect relies on the control of the flow rate by the systems RF generator and the electrode geometry of the “treatment” electrode and its “return” path. In TruSculpt, these are both designed to optimise the current flow through the fat, then into the muscle, where it disperses into very low density back to the return electrode.
 

How does truSculpt affect skin?
 

It is well known that bulk heating the skin to temperatures over 42°C causes a strong inflammatory response in the skin and connective tissue. This inflammatory response, although dependent on the patients wound healing response, can be made more significant based on heating time at temperature. Since TruSculpt heats the fat layer while sustaining a temperature of more than 42°C within all tissue layers in excess of 10 minutes, the added bonus is strong connective tissue remodelling, which can lead to significant improvements in appearance.
